Arnis de Mano is a traditional Filipino martial art that emphasizes on weapon-based fighting with sticks, knives, bladed weapons and other improvised weapons. The word Arnis came from an old Spanish word ‘Arnes’ meaning weapon. Although Arnis places emphasis on weapons it also includes hand-to-hand combat, joint locks, grappling as well as weapon disarming techniques.
In 2016, Urvil James Villaruel an avid explorer of consciousness, a native of Toronto and of Filipino descent set forth on a 5-month journey around the world to discover different martial arts styles and higher spiritual understanding. During his travel in Aklan, Philippines he learned the martial arts of Arnis de Mano under the guidance of grandmaster Jose ‘Pempe’ Repiedad and earned his black belt. Upon coming back from his 5-month journey he started a martial arts academy called “Persistence Academy” where he teaches the philosophy and martial arts of Arnis de Mano.
